The Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring (PRISM), is a coordinated effort to survey shorebirds in North America. PRISM is designed to meet the monitoring goals of the U.S. and Canadian Shorebird Plans. Both plans identified the need for reliable information on the distribution, abundance and population trends of shorebirds. PRISM has four major elements designed to address these information needs: arctic and boreal breeding surveys, temperate, breeding surveys, temperate, non-breeding (migration) surveys, and neotropical surveys.

With the temperate, non-breeding surveys PRISM seeks to integrate and strengthen existing shorebird migration survey efforts, including the International Shorebird Surveys (ISS), the Western Shorebird Survey (WSS) the Canadian Maritimes Shorebird Survey (MSS), and the South Atlantic Migratory Bird Initiative (SAMBI). Regional assessments of key shorebird migration sites are currently being prepared and will provide detailed information for each survey site. Surveys at PRISM sites in the Northeast will follow ISS protocols, expand the exisiting network of ISS sites, and re-initiate surveys at many former ISS sites.

The closer coordination and expanded survey effort at important stopover sites will provide a strong, statistically valid framework for detecting trends in shorebird population size and will assist local managers in meeting their shorebird conservation goals.

The assessments are not yet complete and we would welcome any suggestions or corrections by those with knowledge of each area.
