The Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring (PRISM) is a coordinated effort to survey shorebirds in North America. PRISM is designed to meet the monitoring goals of the U.S. and Canadian Shorebird Conservation Plans, both of which identify the need for reliable information on the distribution, abundance and population trends of shorebirds. PRISM has four major elements designed to address these information needs: arctic and boreal breeding surveys, temperate breeding surveys, temperate non-breeding (migration) surveys, and neotropical surveys.

For the temperate non-breeding surveys, PRISM seeks to integrate and strengthen existing migration survey efforts including the International Shorebird Surveys (ISS) , the Canadian Maritimes Shorebird Survey (MSS) and the South Atlantic Migratory Bird Initiative (SAMBI) . Surveys on the Atlantic coast of North America will follow ISS protocols, expanding the existing network of the ISS and restoring coverage at many ISS locations.

The closer coordination and expanded survey effort at important stopover sites will provide a strong, statistically valid framework for detecting trends in shorebird populations and assist local managers in meeting their shorebird conservation goals.

Regional assessments have been prepared and provide detailed information for each survey site. Use the links to the right to download complete state reports or use the map below to view individual site information. The assessments are being refined and we would welcome any suggestions or corrections by those with knowledge of an area.

To sign up as a surveyor for a PRISM site, please review the ISS protocols. Once you have chosen a site, contact Stephanie Schmidt at Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences, which sponsors the ISS Program.
